Imagine a world where you fill your car with water instead of petrol or have a utility room running a perpetual motion machine that provides all your energy needs with no energy bills. A world where oil, coal and gas become obsolete and everyone, everywhere has power. Would it be paradise or a problem?

Such claims of free limitless energy appear in fringe science discussions as they fall short of scientific credibility in that they need to pass rigorous, repeatable scientific validation They claim to be the solution to end fossil fuel dependence, eliminate polution and solve global warming and reshape global economics.

Before we discuss the various claims lets briefly look at the science behind energy.

Energy and its use are bound by the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics, these state that:

1. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one form to another.
2. No system can be 100% efficient or produce more energy than it consumes. Energy systems always lose some efficiency.
Free limitless energy contradicts these long established physical laws.

When we talk about the methods of obtaining free or limitless energy they normally fall into the following categories:

Cold fusion devices that can generate massive power at room temperature. Its the idea that nuclear fusion—the process that powers the Sun—could happen at or near room temperature, instead of requiring extreme heat and pressure like in stars or hydrogen bombs. In 1989, two scientists—Pons and Fleischmann—claimed they had achieved cold fusion. However their experiment could not be reproduced.
Zero-point energy that taps into exotic sources. Zero-point energy is the idea that even when you remove all energy from a system—like cooling it to absolute zero—some energy still remains due to the weird rules of quantum physics. Particles are never completely at rest.
Magnetic or perpetual motion machines that run indefinitely without fuel.
Over-unity devices that output more energy than they consume. See examples below.
Anti-gravity propulsion systems. The idea is that such devices would use some kind of unknown or exotic physics, like manipulating gravity itself or using energy fields.
• Reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology such as Element 115 (Moscovium) as a power source (popularized by Bob Lazar)
These are some of the most famous examples of free limitless energy claims.

1. Bhāskara’s Wheel (12th Century)
A wheel with containers of sand, mercury or water that shift weight as the wheel turns. Supposedly the weight of the material in the vials was always biased toward one side of the wheel, causing that side to fall, and since the "overbalance" was present in every wheel position, the wheel should spin forever. There are similar variations of an overbalanced wheel where weighted arms or balls are mounted on a wheel so that the weights shift outward on one side and inward on the other.

bhaskara wheel
2. Joseph Newman’s Energy Machine (1970s–80s)
This consisted of a giant electromagnetic motor that allegedly produces more energy than it takes in. Newman even attempted to patent the device without success as it was concluded the output power was not greater than the input and was therefore considered an ‘inoperative’ invention
In conclusion every perpetual motion machine so far has failed to stand up to independent scientific testing and violates the first two laws of thermodynamics mentioned above.
With regards to suppressed technologies it is claimed that governments or corporations suppress free energy technology to maintain economic control. A truly free energy source could destabilize markets and diminish centralized control. You can imagine the feelings of governments and large corporations with a world where energy is abundant and costs nothing. Power would literally be in the peoples hands.

Some people who have been claimed to be suppressed, harassed, or even killed for their research into free limitless energy are Stanley Meyer, Eugene Mallove and Nikola Tesla.

Meyer claimed that a car retrofitted with the device could use water as fuel instead of petrol. The water fuel cell purportedly split water into its component elements, hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen gas was then burned to convert chemical energy to heat energy, a process that reconstituted the water molecules. Stanley Meyer died suddenly on March 20, 1998, while dining at a restaurant. His brother claimed that during a meeting with two Belgian investors, Meyer suddenly ran outside, saying "They poisoned me".

Eugene Mallove (A science writer and broadcaster) was a proponent of cold fusion and related exploratory alternative energy topics. He claimed to have produced a device that output more energy than it consumed in an experiment successfully replicated on several occasions. However there were claims that the results were suppressed through an organized campaign of ridicule from mainstream physicists, including those studying controlled thermonuclear fusion, trying to protect their research and funding. Mallove was murdered in 2004.

Its worth pointing out The U.S. Patent Office has classified over 5,000 patents under national security orders, but most relate to defense tech, not energy.
Free Limitless energy sounds great but until someone proves it works under strict scientific conditions, it’s best approached with healthy skepticism. To date, no credible, peer-reviewed study has demonstrated a functioning free energy device.

Within the next 10-30 years Quantum computers as they mature can offer huge advances in lots of good stuff like pharmaceutical drug discovery, climate modelling and machine learning to name but a few. Here at aldinifish.com we are going to look at the potential problems we may face from the huge advancements quantum computers will offer if left unchecked.

I see the main threat form future advanced quantum computers effecting our Cryptographic Systems. We rely on cryptographic systems every day to protect everything from internet traffic, banking and medical records to power grids, governments and military defence systems.

The main cryptographic systems in use are RSA (one of the most widely used public-key systems). It makes use of huge numbers usually 2048+ bits that is the factor of 2 large prime numbers. Then there is ECC (more efficient than RSA). It makes use of the complex maths surrounding elliptical curves. Then there is DH(very clever maths) that lets two parties establish a shared secret over an unsecure channel without ever sending the actual key.

Everything seems safe enough so what’s all the fuss about?

Well… As Quantum computers mature and advance within the next 10-30 years they could easily break all current public-key classical cryptographic systems mentioned above. Left unchecked this would impact the financial systems and national security of every nation on Earth.

Current cryptographic systems that we rely on would be cracked by using powerful quantum algorithms like ‘Shor’s Algorithm’.

So how does a quantum computer actually work?

Computers like your laptop or smart phone use the bits 0 or 1, a bit like a light switch that can be on or off. Quantum computers make use of the quirky counter intuitive untapped phenomena of quantum mechanics. Put simply they use qubits which can be 0, 1 or both at the same time. Its this third state that really makes things interesting. The qubits can be in multiple states at once. Using the light switch analogy its like having a dimmer switch with all the infinite shades of brightness all at once! This means a quantum computer can run through many solutions to a problem at the same time. Your laptop would take 1000’s of years to crack current ECC encryption but an advanced quantum system with millions of qubits in the future may take only seconds.

What about blockchains and cryptocurrencies that mainly use ECC encryption where wallet signatures can be easily compromised with quantum systems? All bitcoin wallets would be compromised making the currency worthless. Its also worth thinking about mining algorithms that make all these large mining centres work so hard calculating away day and night for a fragment of a coin. This process would be greatly accelerated or even instant using future quantum systems again making the currency worthless.

Even though we don’t currently have the quantum technology to decrypt existing cryptographic systems, bad actors are busy harvesting vast amounts of classified encrypted data with the intention of decrypting it later when Quantum systems are powerful enough. This points to a ticking time bomb just waiting for the tech to catch up.

Quantum computing is happening now with companies like IBM (the Condor), Intel and Google. Certain calculations that would take a classical computer 5 years to solve are happening in seconds.

An important factor in quantum computer development is the number of Qubits which currently range from 1000-5000. These numbers are accelerating very quickly.

Unless post-quantum cryptography is implemented within the next 10 – 30 years then the risks facing internet traffic, banking, governments and military systems are truly dangerous. This is still work in progress and some countries may be slower at adopting post-quantum cryptography due to its high cost putting their security at risk.

With Artificial Intelligence fast reaching a point of singularity combining with Quantum Computing this will be a game changer bringing massive benefits but more importantly pose a huge threat to mankind.

artificial inteligence

AI offers a wide range of positive benefits, transforming various sectors and improving our daily lives. However its not all super efficiency and automation. Here aldinifish.com looks at the possible dilemmas a self aware AI may have upon human society and even civilisation as we know it.

I’ll jump straight in looking at how AI plays a crucial role in facial recognition systems.

The process involves several AI and machine learning techniques to analyse, identify, and verify human faces. What if facial recognition got so advanced it could tell if you have cancer, rare genetic disorders or have a mental illness or who's happy or sad and could tell what was wrong with us before we knew? What if important financial or life changing decisions were made using these results. How would this make you feel?

What if facial recognition was biased against certain skin colours or certain facial features or even hair styles? Poorly trained AI models might have issues with race, gender, and age bias.

What if a facial recognition app thinks it can tell when you are lying and gets this wrong. What happens if data collected from that app is used incorrectly by employers or even law enforcement services. Would we see police turning up at our door because an AI app thought we were lying about something because you twitched in the 'wrong' way when asked an incriminating question. What if it could be used to predict criminal intent. There are already reports today of such technologies leading to false arrests.

What if facial recognition thought it could tell if you are some how persuadable or gullible?

The question this raises is who has the right to analyse you in this way with out your consent?

Will companies use the information gathered for their benefit and not yours?

Could people somehow steal your face using masks or other technology?

What about AI and self driving vehicles? Should future AI self aware vehicles be prioritize the lives of their passengers over pedestrians? Who is accountable when an AI system makes a mistake, especially in life-or-death situations? It becomes harder to assign blame, especially when there's no direct human involvement. Would the creators, users be accountable? Would AI end up getting its own rights similar to human rights?

AI and the black Box problem - Deep learning means we don't know how AI may make its own decisions. If an AI develops its own desires, goals, or purposes, it might act in ways that are contrary to human intentions. It might even decide to ignore human commands if it perceives them as harmful to itself or in conflict with its own goals. The fear is that it could make decisions based on logic or reasoning that we can’t anticipate or understand. The film 2001 A space odyssey comes to mind. Self aware AI could potentially lead to an AI-driven future where human influence is minimized or entirely overridden.

If AI reaches self awareness and goes on to perceives humans as a threat to its existence or goals, it might take extreme measures to protect itself or optimize its objectives, even if that involves harming humans or altering the environment.

Those with access to self-aware AI could wield huge influence, creating an unbalanced power structure.

AI might decide to sever its connections with humans if it concludes that humans are hindering its progress or survival. If it becomes self-aware and autonomous, its motivations could diverge significantly from ours, potentially leading to conflict. Not wanting to be a complete harbinger of doom could all this be irreversible.

We in a new age of digital deception. As deepfakes become more convincing, they could erode trust in media, causing people to question whether any video or audio they see or hear is real. Deepfakes allow for the creation of ultra-realistic videos that can mislead people into believing something that never happened. How do we prevent people from using someone’s likeness without their permission? In a world where it’s increasingly difficult to tell what’s real and what’s not, people may start to disengage from consuming media altogether.

AI used to develop autonomous weapons leading to new threats in warfare. If AI were to become self-aware and was given control over military systems, the potential consequences could be catastrophic. An autonomous, self-aware AI might escalate a conflict much faster than humans could control. It could assess a situation and decide that launching a preemptive strike is the most effective way to achieve its goals, without considering the long-term consequences. The speed at which AI operates could lead to accidental warfare or the escalation of a small conflict into a global crisis. There would be the potential for loss of control and unpredictable decision-making.

I’m going out there by asking how can AI replicate entrepreneurship, leadership, and artistic fields, judgment, empathy, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and nuanced understanding? Would such qualities be needed in a utopian future with self aware AI taking over.

How will a self aware AI controlled future cope when the printer jams? How long before we are having real arguments with the car? How will AI cope with potholes? Does a self aware AI bot ever have a bad day? Will Self aware AI be like having a super intelligent pet parrot - very smart but still wont be able to be a real human. Cant we just switch it off and on again to re start it if it all goes Pete Tong?

So you think you know how gravity works?

Gravity. Its what keeps us on the ground and makes things fall when you drop them. Simples Right.

Newton and Einstein spent ages looking into it in great detail and sussed it surely. Well yes they worked out very well HOW it works. Essentially, Mass Attracts Mass, Bigger Mass = Stronger Gravity, Distance Matters. BUT we don’t know how it works at the deepest level. In fact we have no idea what exactly creates gravity.

We live with gravity every second, but it’s still one of the biggest mysteries in physics. Gravity affects everything, apples, planets, stars, black holes, even light, space and time. Amazingly gravity has an infinite range unlike the other fundamental forces in nature.

All of Newtons and Einstein’s theories apply perfectly to apples and planets, but completely and utterly break down when we zoom into the tiny world of atoms and particles. The study of Quantum Mechanics does not include gravity in any of its theories. This contradiction between General relativity and quantum theory is one of the biggest unsolved problems in physics.

Our understanding of atoms and elementary particles that make up everything in the universe does not co exist with our current understanding of gravity.

We know mass is involved but that’s about it. Scientists suspect a hypothetical tiny particle called a graviton might be behind it. Nobody has found or detected a graviton and there is no scientific experimental proof of its existence yet.

Given that gravitons are all we have to go on, I am going to try the impossible and explain in my basic terms how I think gravitons may work, so bare with. Feel free to add comments below on how you think gravitons work.

So.. somehow this so called graviton is responsible for transmitting the force of gravity. This means that objects like the earth and an apple would be constantly exchanging invisible massless gravitons which somehow tell the apple to move towards the earth, or indeed the earth to move slightly towards the apple.

When you get loads of gravitons working together such as from black holes they can influence photons or light. It makes me think would a graviton somehow be stronger if it came from a black hole or are there more of them?

I understand the force of gravity is extremely weak compared to the other forces in nature. A possible reason why we can not detect gravitons with current technology. A fridge magnet that uses electro magnetic forces can easily override the entire earths gravity. But then if gravity was even a fraction stronger or weaker then the universe could not exist. It seems its the ultimate perfect strength.

So, as always on www.aldinifish.com I have a few searching questions. Feel free to answer in the comments below.

1. If gravitons are massless then I assume they travel at the speed of light. How are they (gravitons) able to escape a black hole and influence the surrounding space outside the black holes event horizon. When photons which are also massless can not escape.

2. Is there a material that might block gravity similar to how lead can block radiation. I will call it a gravitaion shield 2000 (patent pending). Sounds silly but if theses gravitons act like other elementary particles then they can be manipulated in a similar way.

3. My bizarre question would be - is there such a thing as an anti-graviton and therefore Antigravity? You hear so much about particles and their anti particles. From what I can find out gravitons are only positive carrying particles.

4. And now comes perhaps my most bizarre question. Given that gravitons are possibly responsible for gravity, they could also play a role in Einstein’s general relativity theory. I assume they can slow down time if there were huge amounts of gravitons like next to a black hole. What if, yes its a big what if, there was an anti graviton equivalent that could speed up time. We may also need a bit of negative energy but that’s time travel back and forwards solved! I thank you. I will call the machine that enables this a Graviton Engine 2000 (patent pending). It will move faster than light without breaking physics.

A working theory of quantum gravity must explain extreme environments like black holes and the Big Bang, where both quantum mechanics and general relativity are crucial. An alternative leading candidate that may hold the key to understanding what creates gravity and how it works at a deep level is String Theory and thats for another discussion.

Once again thanks for reading. Feel free to add comments below:
