AI offers a wide range of positive benefits, transforming various sectors and improving our daily lives. However its not all super efficiency and automation. Here aldinifish.com looks at the possible dilemmas a self aware AI may have upon human society and even civilisation as we know it.

I’ll jump straight in looking at how AI plays a crucial role in facial recognition systems.

The process involves several AI and machine learning techniques to analyse, identify, and verify human faces. What if facial recognition got so advanced it could tell if you have cancer, rare genetic disorders or have a mental illness or who's happy or sad and could tell what was wrong with us before we knew? What if important financial or life changing decisions were made using these results. How would this make you feel?

What if facial recognition was biased against certain skin colours or certain facial features or even hair styles? Poorly trained AI models might have issues with race, gender, and age bias.

What if a facial recognition app thinks it can tell when you are lying and gets this wrong. What happens if data collected from that app is used incorrectly by employers or even law enforcement services. Would we see police turning up at our door because an AI app thought we were lying about something because you twitched in the 'wrong' way when asked an incriminating question. What if it could be used to predict criminal intent. There are already reports today of such technologies leading to false arrests.

What if facial recognition thought it could tell if you are some how persuadable or gullible?

The question this raises is who has the right to analyse you in this way with out your consent?

Will companies use the information gathered for their benefit and not yours?

Could people somehow steal your face using masks or other technology?

What about AI and self driving vehicles? Should future AI self aware vehicles be prioritize the lives of their passengers over pedestrians? Who is accountable when an AI system makes a mistake, especially in life-or-death situations? It becomes harder to assign blame, especially when there's no direct human involvement. Would the creators, users be accountable? Would AI end up getting its own rights similar to human rights?

AI and the black Box problem - Deep learning means we don't know how AI may make its own decisions. If an AI develops its own desires, goals, or purposes, it might act in ways that are contrary to human intentions. It might even decide to ignore human commands if it perceives them as harmful to itself or in conflict with its own goals. The fear is that it could make decisions based on logic or reasoning that we can’t anticipate or understand. The film 2001 A space odyssey comes to mind. Self aware AI could potentially lead to an AI-driven future where human influence is minimized or entirely overridden.

If AI reaches self awareness and goes on to perceives humans as a threat to its existence or goals, it might take extreme measures to protect itself or optimize its objectives, even if that involves harming humans or altering the environment.

Those with access to self-aware AI could wield huge influence, creating an unbalanced power structure.

AI might decide to sever its connections with humans if it concludes that humans are hindering its progress or survival. If it becomes self-aware and autonomous, its motivations could diverge significantly from ours, potentially leading to conflict. Not wanting to be a complete harbinger of doom could all this be irreversible.

We in a new age of digital deception. As deepfakes become more convincing, they could erode trust in media, causing people to question whether any video or audio they see or hear is real. Deepfakes allow for the creation of ultra-realistic videos that can mislead people into believing something that never happened. How do we prevent people from using someone’s likeness without their permission? In a world where it’s increasingly difficult to tell what’s real and what’s not, people may start to disengage from consuming media altogether.

AI used to develop autonomous weapons leading to new threats in warfare. If AI were to become self-aware and was given control over military systems, the potential consequences could be catastrophic. An autonomous, self-aware AI might escalate a conflict much faster than humans could control. It could assess a situation and decide that launching a preemptive strike is the most effective way to achieve its goals, without considering the long-term consequences. The speed at which AI operates could lead to accidental warfare or the escalation of a small conflict into a global crisis. There would be the potential for loss of control and unpredictable decision-making.

I’m going out there by asking how can AI replicate entrepreneurship, leadership, and artistic fields, judgment, empathy, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and nuanced understanding? Would such qualities be needed in a utopian future with self aware AI taking over.

How will a self aware AI controlled future cope when the printer jams? How long before we are having real arguments with the car? How will AI cope with potholes? Does a self aware AI bot ever have a bad day? Will Self aware AI be like having a super intelligent pet parrot - very smart but still wont be able to be a real human. Cant we just switch it off and on again to re start it if it all goes Pete Tong?
